COACHES
Jenna Ries: Director, Field HockeyCoach Ries, a native of Bethesda, Md., played at the University of Maryland. She pursued her passion for field hockey and lacrosse after college through coaching and is the former varsity Field Hockey and Lacrosse coach at Quince Orchard High School and currently current Varsity Lacrosse Coach at Bethesda Chevy Chase High School. The first person to be named Washington Post All-Met as both a player and a coach, Ries lead her teams to 12 division titles, seven Regional Championships and two state titles. She was named All-Met Coach of the Year in 2001 and was an All-County Coach’s Selection for the 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2006 seasons. She also coached the Jackals to their first appearance in the D pool at last season’s NIT Tournament. Ries is also the founder of Get Good Sports and Champions of Tomorrow.
Devin Payton: Director, FutsalCoach Payton began his athletic career at Gaithersburg High School in Gaithersburg, Md. before pursuing his soccer career at Old Dominion University, winning the Parade and NSCAA All-American and Gatorade Maryland Player of the Year. Payton then took his talent to the professional level, playing for the Northern VA Royals, Maryland Mania, and Carolina Dynamo. In 2002, he played for the Futsal National Team before turning his focus to coaching. He is the director of the Magic Futsal League, Magic Santos Futsal Club, and the Magic Moves Soccer Academy. Under his coaching, his teams won numerous Maryland State Cup Championships, Regional Championships, and U.S. Futsal National Youth Championships. A member of NSCAA, Payton is also a MD ODP technical coach, and DDP U-19’s Boys Head Coach. He is co-vice president of Maryland Futsal, a national clinician for the Maryland and U.S. Futsal programs, and member of the Magic Futsal Foundation that gives futsal and soccer scholarships for disadvantaged children.
Corey Samperton: Director, Girls Lacrosse
Coach Corey attended the University of Notre Dame Lacrosse 2002-2004. Played attack for the Irish and started as a Freshman. Four-year letter-winner in field hockey and lacrosse at Georgetown Visitation High School (three years) and lacrosse powerhouse St. Stephen's & St. Agnes High School (senior year) ... selected first team all-met in field hockey (2001) and all-Conference four times in field hockey throughout high school ... helped St. Stephen's and St. Agnes to undefeated season and conference championship in field hockey & lacrosse ... selected all-City and all-State in field hockey as a senior ... two-time U.S. Lacrosse Association high school All-American (2001, 2002) ... winner of the "Saint Award" in both field hockey and lacrosse her senior year.
Jim Cahill: Director, Girls Lacrosse
Prior to Champions, Cahill coached the Parkville Girls Lacrosse Teams for 7 years. A graduate of Johns Hopkins Univ where he played and started on the nationally ranked team for 4 years, 2 of which included NCAA championship games for the Blue Jays. Coach Cahill played for the MD Men’s Club Lacrosse team.
Jim Bruno: Director, SoccerCoach Bruno is going into his 21st season at Good Counsel high school in Olney, Md. He has won 5 WCAC championships and his teams have been ranked in the top 25 in the nation 12 times being ranked #1 during the 2000 season. His record stands at 310-79-37. He was named the Washington Post All-Met Coach of the year in 1994, the NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) named him the National Coach of the year in 1998. The NSCAA also named him the Maryland State COY in 1998, 2002 and 2007. He has been named the COY by the Gazette and Journal Newspapers on several occasions. Jim coaches travel girls teams for Montgomery Soccer Club and has been named their COY in 2002 and 2007. His U17 Santos team has been in the State finals in 2006 and 2008. He is presently the Director of Montgomery Soccer Academy which has been doing soccer camps for 20 years. He is also the Director of Coaching for Montgomery Soccer, Inc. Coach Bruno has coached at all levels from K-High School and holds the Premier Diploma and GK Diploma from NSCAA.
Matt Breslin: Director, Boys Lacrosse
High School All American, NJ Goalie and Player of the Year in 1997. Breslin was Captain of the Duke Lacrosse Team in 2001. He was Division I All American MLL Goalie for the New Jersey Pride 2002 and Headfirst College Advisory Team Lacrosse Director.
